The Old and New Age of Hip-Hop at a Glance.

August 23, 2009

Hip Hop is the result of great transitions. During the late 70’s, people who loved Soul, Funk, Jazz and RnB decided to make a great and radical leap forward. They took various elements of the music they loved and combined it to create Hip-Hop.

Years after its birth, Hip-Hop underwent its first transformation, Gangsta Rap. The music is mainly influenced by the turbulent lives of the artists who created the songs during the 90’s. Gangsta Rap also brought forth the East Coast-West Coast rivalry. People during that time blamed the music for the increased cases of violence.

From the Gangsta Rap of the 90’s, Hip-Hop evolved again. The music as we know it now, Mainstream or Contemporary Hip-Hop, started roughly in the beginning of the new millennia. Its theme is mostly influenced by the marketing and commercial aspect of the music (excluding of course, the Underground). Hip Hop started to become a fusion of Rap, Pop and RnB. Although Mainstream Hip-Hop was good for the music industry, it didn’t contribute much to the musical and artistic aspect of the culture. Songs became more and more commercialized, ignorant and generic.

The evolution of Hip-Hop is inevitable. Like the Renaissance of the 15th century, a rebirth of knowledge and culture is about to begin. Neo Hip-Hop or New-Age Hip-Hop is actuated mostly by the young rappers of today. Rappers who have grown tired of the degeneration of the Hip-Hop culture mostly caused by Mainstream Hip-Hop. This new movement concentrates on the fundamental values of the original Hip-Hop of the late 70’s and 80’s, which were peace, unity, realness, feeling good and having fun. It also focuses on the expansion of horizons and exploration of new styles. This “Hip-Hop Renaissance” is set to bring forth a new era in this culture, the New Age of Hip-Hop……………

We, New Fro Matter, are part of this “rebirth”.
